A pharmacist on Wednesday said it is investigating claims that the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra can cause heart attacks and strokes.
Pharmacy sales of the drug in the U. S. have plummeted in recent years due to fears of a possible rise in prescription drug costs.
Pharmacies and drugstores said they have found little to no evidence of a link between Viagra and heart problems.
But pharmacists at a supermarket said Viagra, which is also sold under the brand name Revatio, can cause life-threatening side effects such as heart attacks and strokes.
Dr Peter Breda, of London's Royal London Hospital, said it was important to check whether the drug could cause heart problems.
"It's very important to check for cardiovascular disease, but it's also important to check for any known serious health problems such as stroke, heart attack or liver disease," he said.
Breda said pharmacists were now more than 500 per cent less likely to recommend Viagra for use in patients with heart disease or other serious conditions.
Dr Graham Jackson, who is managing the pharmacy complaints at the British Heart and Stroke Foundation, said: "There are certainly people who will not take Viagra because they think they are experiencing heart attacks or strokes.
"But if the drugs aren't working, it's a real concern for the patient and not the health of the patient's family and the community."

The effects of Viagra have been seen in a number of clinical trials involving more than 200,000 patients, including men with heart disease.

The MHRA's review of clinical trials found that the studies were conducted under widely varying conditions and participants were often given differing doses of sildenafil, often prescribed for erectile dysfunction.
Breda said: "The results of the clinical trials should not be interpreted as suggesting that sildenafil is the cause of these events."
